You can park at the very bottom to stop at the red gate, just don't block the road. This is a beautiful walk, nice pavilion at the top with a Port-a-potty.
There are informative civil war battle signs and a parking area just after turning onto Cannon Hill Rd from Saltlick Rd / Maple Ave. A covered picnic table overlooks the train tracks nearby.
No hike information was posted. Along the road / fire road, Google maps shows uphill for about the first half then a walk along the ridge to get to the overlook. One-way distance appears to be 2-2.5 miles along the road.
I thought you could drive to the overlook and drove past the small sign saying "open seasonally to hikers". I had to turn around when the road turned into a fire road.
The online photo looked nice, would be nice to see it in person some time...
